I absolutely love the #velvetunderground . Especially after finding out their live & rare tracks, which in my opinion really capture the special chemistry between the band members. Beyond Oblivion is a project targeted at the wide target audience of people who do not want to pay for music, and their idea on how to make them pay for it is in my opinion brilliant.
Basically you would be paying a one-off “music licence” charge everytime you buy a music playing device, such as an MP3 player, and that would grant you access to the widest possible music library for free, ads-free and subscription-free. This works by calculating the average life-time of these dispensable devices and charging you based on how many plays you will get out them. So for example an iPod that should last you 2 years might cost you £40 more, but that would include unlimited music consumption from the widest possible music library.
I think it would work if the price is low enough and the service is good enough to actually make non-payers pay. :)
